We left Hamburg and drove north towards Denmark.

Denmark - the land of bricks and fairy tales

After a quick stop at a supermarket on the German / Danish border to stock up on supplies, we made it to Billund, the home of Lego. This small town is flooded with tourists, it even has its own airport! We were visiting Lego House, which has various zones with challenges to build different things from Lego - creativity is encouraged! We spent a good few hours making race cars, fish, trucks, flowers, faces and rainbows.

We had booked to have dinner at the Mini Chef restaurant at Lego House. You order using lego blocks, before your food is delivered to you by the restaurant’s robots, Robert and Roberta. The food was tasty and the lego blocks at our dining table kept us all entertained. It was a fun day!

We travelled 15 mins east to our overnight motel, Go Sleep Bredehaus. We were expecting a similar experience to a French Premiere Classe, so were pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. The separate kitchen area was very welcome, meaning we could stay up while H slept in the bedroom.

The next day, we left Jutland and drove to the island of Fyn to visit Odense, the home of Hans Christian Andersen. The museum there was very interesting - Andersen wrote over 150 fairy tales including The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Snow Queen, Thumbelina and many more. The museum was interactive and had a lovely children’s area including an art studio with many craft things.

Having learned our lesson with regards to trying to find restaurants for a fussy child, we had made a packed lunch which we ate in the park before wandering around the town and seeing Andersen’s childhood home. Odense was lovely and worth a visit.

We left Fyn and headed to the next island Sjælland and Hundige which is a suburb of Copenhagen. We stayed in a little A frame cabin, with small beds in the roof for H and a sofa bed for us. The playground had a massive bouncy castle style pillow which was a big hit, and we had dinner at the Asian buffet restaurant next door.

The next morning we went for a paddle in the sea at the nearby beach before heading to Dragør, a very quaint fishing village next to Copenhagen airport. The narrow cobbled streets and cute yellow houses were lovely to look around. We then walked over to the fort to see the Big Mermaid statue before getting back in the car, driving round the airport and over the long bridge to Sweden!
